Wow does that title sound like a commercial ad for weight loss or what? But I like it so it's not going to change. :)
Happy halfway done with March! Crazy to think that just in a few short days (like after next week) we'll be all done with March and moving on to April. Which means that finals are coming up for those in college, and for me it means that I get to move back home and go to work and enjoy my time with my family and friends before the mission. :) Bah, sometimes it's hard to stay calm and focus because I just want to have my call already! But I am being patient, don't worry. :) Well, sorta patient.
One good thing about this month though is MARCH MADNESS!!! Whoot let's watch all of these awesome basketball teams kill it or get killed and then see if our brackets are even close. I know mine isn't,because I haven't actually created one.. I know shame on me but I don't like doing them and if I do I either pick them because I like their name or they are the underdog... :)

So I wish that this post was going to be more exciting... but honestly the forum yesterday wasn't the most exciting. The guy seemed really cool, and really accomplished. His name was Dr. Brent C. James and he's one pretty accomplished doctor. I think he works at Intermountain Health Care and he's accomplished a lot of things. I found a short biography you can go to that I'll post down below, but yeah, either way he's accomplished and really nice and cool. Just his topic wasn't the most interest to me. It was on health care, and he talked about Obamacare and just the pros and cons of having health insurance and all the statistics.
Don't get me wrong I have things to tell you, but it may not be the most exciting topic for everyone. Also I plan on adding in my own stuff, and just talking about staying fit and healthy and such, which is slightly ironic because I'm not the most fit person in the world, but I sure know what I should be doing to be more fit. :) I'm working on it though, so don't judge me too harshly. :)

One really cool thing he talked about was the power of rescue and miracles. If you really think about it, every rescue is it's own little miracle. At any moment something could go wrong and you might lose the life of the person you are trying to save or the person who is doing the saving could lose his life.
Or maybe we should just look at the little things in life that could possibly be saving us from a big accident. That that picture over there, read some of those crazy stories as to why people missed going into work that day or were late and didn't die during the 9/11 attacks. I know, there were still a lot of people who did die, and it truly is a sad thing and I pray that their families are pushing through and getting the help they need. But we also shouldn't forget the miracles that happened, because those are miracles, little maybe weird ones, but miracles. Especially to the people who survived and their families.
I also found it interesting when he mentioned how here in the U.S. we put a lot of money and effort into saving people, and we do it without thought to our own lives or what the cost could be. We see someone in need or help and we go help them, it's the right thing to do. If you saw someone stuck or struggling, for the majority of people they would go out of their way to help the stranger.
We also need to remember when we see those statistics of people who are suffering from poverty or diseases or whatever it is that it's not just another number, they are real people with real problems. Don't get me wrong I completely believe that people can help themselves get out of bad situations, I know finding a job can be hard or whatever it is, but you can't just quit because after a few times it didn't work out. If that was the case we might not have the light bulb. Thomas Edison once said that he hadn't failed, but he just found 10,000 ways that won't work. or when he said, "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." Such a true statement, so don't give up. Keep pushing forward, trust in God and that opportunity will come, and then once you are back on your feet don't forget to thank God for His divine help and start giving to the poor. (ha OK rant over sorry about that back to the topic on hand)

So, what determines health? I guess there was a study done, I really wish I could tell you what, but if you want to know go read Dr. James' talk (I don't know if that apostrophe is in the right place so I am sorry if it offends anyone, those never made much sense to me anyway). Basically there are 4 main things that determine someone's health and for the sake of making this simple he rounded the numbers off nicely for us.
1. Behaviors (40%). So things like tobacco, suicide, stds, unwed teenage pregnancies, obesity, etc.
2. Genetics (30%).
3. Environment/Public Health (20%). So clean air, safe water, good food.
4. Health Care Delivery (10%). And right here is where the miracles happen.

Now for the fun. Everyone is going to tell you that there is this "Great Equation" that will solve all your weight problems and health problems if you just follow the right health activities (so good diet and regular exercise). Which definitely helps, but it's not completely true. There are healthy people out there who eat well, blah blah, but say don't take the time to go to the doctor when they get sick and end up dying from something that a simple antibiotic would cure.
Now here's where I get on my soapbox and preach about exercising right and eating right. I really do think that if you are regularly exercising, whether that be going on a walk a couple times a week with your husband or playing a sport once or twice a week, just something to stay active and in shape can really help you out. Also, eating healthy can help too. Don't get me wrong I don't eat very well, I still love my junk food and enjoy eating out, but maybe try to eat in more and out less. Maybe try to do a few nice home cooked meals during the week, literally those could be the game changer. and not only that but it isn't super healthy for you to be eating a lot of red meat. If anything you should read the Word of Wisdom and follow it's teachings. It's in the Doctrine and Covenants section 89. Also the food pyramid is a good guide. They don't actually use the pyramid anymore, but honestly it's my favorite way to show how much of each group we should be eating each day. :) So more fruits and veggies, less sweets.
Also, water really helps with everything. It keeps your body functioning, keeps your complexion looking great, helps you not get so sick. It's like natures medicine. :) Speaking of medicine, now I'm not saying we should be taking medicine for everything and anything, because that's bad too, but every once in a while it's good especially for things that can be harmful, like viruses and major bacterial infections. There is a reason why we have medicine, to help us, not hinder us.

Last cool thing he said that I liked was that health level is driven by education level which drives the income levels. If you are more educated on how to treat yourself and get the help and know the symptoms, it will increase your health. If kids are more educated about the health risks and costs and benefits, they can make better decisions. Also, it seems to be that those who at least get a high school education or equivalency have better health, which these two both drive better income because you are able to work and make the money and then spend the money, helping the economy. :)
You can make a difference in this world, but it all has to start with you. You want to lower the poverty level, start with yourself, get yourself in the right place financially and spiritually and physically and everything and then you'll be able to help people out. If you aren't well off in every category of life, you sure can't help others out. So start with you, like the King of Pop Mr. Michael Jackson once said in a song, "I'm Starting With The Man In The Mirror. I'm Asking Him To Change His Ways, And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer. If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change." What inspiring words, even if you don't like him. You have to start with yourself. Make sure you are doing the things needed to be spiritually, physically, mentally, financially, etc stable and healthy and you can change the world. Even if it's just one person, you'll at least be changing their world.
